Gold Cup à Oulton Park 1972
| La 19e édition de la Gold Cup, une course de Formule 1 hors championnat, s'est déroulée sur
le circuit d'Oulton Park, situé près de Tarporley, Cheshire, Angleterre le 29 mai 1972. Inscrits La course avait été avancée au week-end férié dans l'espoir d'attirer plus d'inscriptions. Cependant, une course de Formule 2 en compétition à Crystal Palace a retenu des participants potentiels. Bien que la course attirait régulièrement les meilleures équipes de Grande-Bretagne et d'Europe, les coûts croissants de la F1 et de plus en plus de pays souhaitant avoir leur propre Grand Prix, la Gold Cup a failli tomber à l'eau. En conséquence, les organisateurs se sont tournés vers la COEGPI pour attirer plus de participants et maintenir une fois de plus une véritable course de F1. À peu près tous les participants habituels de la COEGPI étaient là, sauf Pierre Bat, Thomas el Zoghbi, Bob Bondurant, James Hunt, Erick Bernard et Jean Christophe. En échange 2 nouvelles équipes sont apparues : - Chris Lewis, vu pour la dernière fois en 1970 est de retour dans une vieille BRM P153 de l'année dernière avec le soutien de MADOM et de Motor Racing Staples. Le pilote d'usine et de développement Lola est de retour aux monoplaces après une saison complète de Sportscar. Il y a des rumeurs selon lesquelles il se prépare à adapter un châssis Lola F5000 pour être propulsé par un BRM V12 et participer à certaines courses COEGPI, et au moins au GP de Grande-Bretagne. - Paul Chiachierini, vu pour la dernière fois dans une Lotus F5000, a négocié un accord avec Aston Martin pour adapter leur moteur V8 Lagonda à la Formule 1. Il se lance dans la course sans autre ambition que de débrouiller la voiture en condition de course et d'apprendre. L'argent vient des apéritifs Martini, car l'entreprise italienne est un peu déçue des résultats de l'équipe Tecno, loin des standards qu'elle s'était fixés dans les formules inférieures. L'Equipe Vaillante a apporté une troisième voiture, pour le pilote bulgare "Vasko". Cette fois, la voiture, une 711, est sponsorisée par Traubisoda, une boisson non alcoolisée qui se vend derrière le rideau de fer. Chez Vulkan, l'équipe principale n'engage que Pierre Sheller. La deuxième voiture est prêtée à Jean-Pierre Lebel, pour le compte de Vulkan Future, l'Académie des pilotes installée près de Silverstone. Une troisième voiture, une T3-Berta, est engagée pour Luis Pereira Bueno, sous les couleurs brésiliennes de Vulkan-Pegaso venture. |
The 19th International Gold Cup was a non-championship Formula One race, which was held on the Oulton Park circuit,
located near Tarporley, Cheshire, England on 29 May 1972. Entry The race had been brought forward to the Bank Holiday weekend in the hope of attracting more entries. However, a competing Formula Two race at Crystal Palace took away some potential entrants. Although the race regularly attracted the top teams from across Britain and Europe, the increasing costs of F1 and more countries wishing to have their own Grand Prix, the Gold Cup fell by wayside. As a result, the organisers turned towards COEGPI to attract more entrants and maintain a true F1 race once more. About all the usual COEGPI entrants were here but Pierre Bat, Thomas el Zoghbi, Bob Bondurant, James Hunt, Erick Bernard and Jean Christophe. In exchange 2 new teams appeared : - Chris Lewis, last seen in 1970 is back in an old BRM P153 from last year with support from MADOM and Motor Racing Staples. The Lola works and development pilot is back to monoposto after a full Sportscar season. | Sur le bucolique circuit anglais, je décroche la pole position devant un Pierre Sheller en grande forme.
La tension habituelle qui règne sur le front de mon ami semble s'être dissipé. Concentré,
mais pas contracté, il vole sur le petit tourniquet et j'ai le plus grand mal à le coiffer d'une
poignée de centièmes. Derrière Luigi est aussi en grande forme et il prend la 3ème place devant les deux Vaillante et Peterson. Je me souviens dee cette course avec un grand plaisir. En etat de grâce, je boucle le circuit à une moyenne de 177 km/h malgré l'épingle et le fameux "dear leap" dont je déjoue les pièges cette fois ci. Pierre me menace jusqu'au bout, et nous terminons roues dans roues à l'issu d'un diel qui aira duré toute la course. Derrière nous, Michel Vaillant, Christian Ethuin, Riccardo Priori et McLeod ont dépassé Luigi. Mais que se passe-t-il chez SCS? La course médiocre de Luigi Mennella a surpris plus d'un et on s'est alors souvenu d'avoir entendu des éclats de voix dans le stand campanien durant les essais. Nathy Wehbé, n'a d'ailleurs pas fait des essais tonitruants et a abandonné dans le premier quart de la course, sur panne de freins. Après la remise des prix, je vais voir mon ami pour aller aux nouvelles. Je trouve les deux tourtereaux blottis dans les bras l'un de l'autre. Je souris et m'apprête à les laisser seuls, mais Nathy me retient. - Tu sais cousin Philippe, c'était peut être ma dernière course. - Mais pourquoi? Ca arrive un mauvais résultat ! Le couple italo libanais éclate de rire. - ma no, non è questo! idiota! réplique Luigi - Tu vas être tonton ! m'avoue enfin Nathy. Et ce grand nigaud sera papa (en montrant Luigi). Il a été inquiet pour moi toute la course et hier, nous nous sommes disputés car il refusait que je parte ! Il vaut mieux que j'arrête de courir, sinon il ne va plus avancer... et elle part d'un grand éclat de rire. |
